Behnam Kohandel is a Registered Psychologist who holds a Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology. Behnam has over 15 years experience working with individuals who are facing phobias, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, anger, bereavement and trauma, particularly complex trauma with dissociative symptoms. Behnam also has expertise working with couples who are facing difficulties in the areas of communication, conflict resolution, sexual desire, and infidelity.
Behnam’s own personal challenges with loss and trauma enables him to empathize with his clients. Clients, in turn, feel empowered by Behnam’s display of resiliency, which helps them to develop their own capacity to deal with their emotional struggles.
Behnam utilizes Internal Family Systems Psychotherapy (IFS). This approach offers a clear, normalizing, and empowering method of understanding human problems. Depending on the client’s concerns, Behnam also employs Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and Emotional Freedom Techniques to facilitate change. Behnam believes all person’s have an innate capacity to overcome their difficulties in a safe environment, and that his role as a therapist is to provide his clients with support and encouragement so that they may tap into their internal strengths.
Behnam has been happily married for 30 years and has two adult children. In his spare time, he enjoys listening to pop and classical music, watching science fiction movies, hiking, and reading Stephen Hunter and Patricia Briggs books.
